Sanjay Bangar on IPL 2026 Retentions: “The signs were there”

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar shared his thoughts on the early retention decisions ahead of the IPL 2026 season, saying that several moves from franchises were expected based on performances over the last two years.

Speaking about Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release star all-rounder Andre Russell, Bangar said he wasn’t surprised.

The signs were there,” Bangar said, noting that the franchise had shown indications earlier that they were moving toward a different balance and long-term combination.

Bangar added that teams are now looking at multi-season planning, especially with the mega auction approaching. According to him, franchises are choosing players who fit into their three-year strategy rather than short-term impact.

He explained that teams prefer players who are consistent, adaptable, and financially efficient, as this helps maintain purse flexibility for the 2026 mega auction.

Bangar also highlighted that certain players released before the deadline may still return through the auction.

Teams often release big names for tactical reasons and then attempt to buy them back,” he said.

With the IPL 2026 retention deadline set for November 15, Bangar believes fans should expect more strategic calls from franchises as they finalize their squads.
